How to accomplish a school goal

Setting unrealistic goals could prepare you for disappointment and frustration while setting goals that are too easy won't challenge you to your full potential. Learning to create and work towards achievable goals can help you succeed in school and life.

PREPARING FOR SUCCESS

1.            Determine what type of goal you want to set. There are many possible goals you could set, but the goal type refers to how you will measure your progress and success. The two main types are process objectives and result objectives.

Process goals focus on the work you will do in a given time period. An example of a process goal would be to complete and submit all your assignments on time this week.
Result goals focus on the results of your work. An example of a result goal would be to earn a score of at least 90% in your next test.

2.            Identify why your goal is important. Having a goal in mind may not always be sufficient to keep you inspired. If this is the case, it may be important to remember why this goal is meaningful to you and why you hope to achieve it. Reflecting on the outcome of this goal – the positive results if you succeed and the negative results if you don't – can help you stay more focused and driven over time.
Do you have to do well to pass a class? Are you trying to improve your overall globe? Maybe you want to do well in a class so that you can eventually look for a job in a related field. If so, you'll want to learn as much as possible in this class.

3.            Set up a reward system to stay motivated. Some people work better when they know that there is some type of reward they will receive. Having a self-imposed compensation plan helps you stay driven and measure your progress so you can determine whether or not you deserve your "treat" for the day, week, month, or year.

Consider setting incremental rewards. Set smaller rewards for minor mile markers and larger rewards to accomplish the toughest parts of your goal. Imagine climbing stairs. Each staircase is a mini-lens that basically leads you to the main goal at the top.

Decide on certain types of reinforcement that will help you stay motivated. It can be a favorite snack, an event you want to go to, a physical item you would like to buy, or even a vacation or an hour off from your normal schedule.

Use this reward to motivate yourself. Agree in advance that you will not be able to enjoy your reward unless you have accomplished your goal. Consider asking a close friend to help you stay motivated or prevent you from surrendering your reward without success.
